2009 Grant Awards


In 2009, Appalachian Women’s Fund distributed a total of $55,500 for programs to help women and girls in the Appalachian Mountain area.  An allocations committee made up of AWF members reviewed all applications. Sixteen agencies applied for grants through AWF.  Thirteen of these requests were approved, at least in part, in six areas of need.

Domestic Violence Knows No Borders

  • A Safe Home for Everyone (ASHE):Emergency communications, conferences and salaries
  • Domestic Abuse is Not Acceptable (DANA):  Assist victims of domestic abuse and their families in Alleghany County
  • Opposing Abuse with Service, Information and Shelter (OASIS):  Confidential support group for women exposed to domestic violence in Watauga County
  • Peace Rose Sisters: Helped defray costs for OASIS calendar to raise awareness of domestic violence in our communities

Credit Asset Opportunity

  • WAMY Community Outreach:  A new program to assist women in the areas of improved financial literacy and/or credit repair in Watauga, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey Counties

Substance Abuse

  • Family Solutions/New River Behavioral Health:  Provide supportive housing for single mothers in outpatient treatment and recovery from substance abuse disorders

Homelessness

  • Hospitality House Homeless Shelter:  New construction funding for the women and children’s dormitory in Watauga County serving seven counties

Education

  • Appalachian State University:  Gap tuition for 10 first generation female students enrolled in the ACCESS program
  • Avery YO!:  Funding for single working grandmother to provide after school services for two children
  • Rainbow Center: Provide funds for education costs of at risk females in the Residential Care program
  • Sugar Grove Developmental Day Care:  Tuition reimbursement to further the education of their female teachers
  • Western Youth Network: Provide facilitator for The Girls’ Circle after school program

Healthcare

  • Community Care Clinic:  Women-specific medical and dental services

AWF Facilitated Projects:

  • Gather and distribute member gifts at our annual holiday meeting for indigent women in our community
  • Provide basic needs items for women transferring from the services of OASIS and Hospitality House to an independent life
  • Conduct makeovers through beauty industry professionals and provide professional clothing for women who are working to improve their lives
