January, 2012: Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2012 Martin Luther King Challenge! The MLK Challenge is a full day of service organized by Appalachian State University to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year eleven volunteers went around to local businesses collecting donations for the Basic Buckets for New Beginnings.
It can be very difficult for women who are getting out of a crisis situation and ready to live independently. Upon leaving the shelter, clients have very limited financial resources. The day-to-day items needed to run a home are often expensive but necessary. Cleaning supplies and hygiene products are among the most expensive items that we all purchase. That’s where the buckets come in. Here how it works: fill one bucket with cleaning supplies and another with personal hygiene items. As the client leaves to begin her new life free from violence, she takes two “buckets of basics” to get her started.
This year’s MLK Challenge volunteers collected enough to fill thirty buckets! They also came away with a number of gift certificates and donations for the Basic Buckets. Thanks to all the volunteers and businesses who generously donated their time, money, and goods this MLK day.
Did you get a new laptop for Christmas? Have an old one laying around? Consider donating it to AWF! We're collecting laptops for students in the ACCESS financial aid program at ASU and for the OASIS crisis shelter. Old computers will be wiped clean first. Please, no laptops older than 5 years. The drop-off point is Kilwins Ice Cream Shop at Tanger Outlets (where you'll get a $5 gift card as a token of appreciation) or by appointment. For more details information, see the article on GoBlueRidge.net.
Time to put away the shorts and sandals and bring out the sweaters! Remember to take your fall & winter items that you would like to replace to Anna Banana's. Anna will donate 50% of the sale of your gently used clothes to AWF. Don't forget to tell her you're a member!
Walkins welcome on Mondays from 10am - 5pm and on other days by appointment only. Call ahead to schedule a time (828) 865-2000. Anna Banana's is located at 641 West King Street in downtown Boone.
December, 2011: Thanks to everyone who helped make our 2011 Holiday Luncheon a success! We had a great turnout of folks who brought gifts like warm clothing for women and girls in our community who needed it most. Kathy Jordan from Usborne Books was there selling beautifully illustrated children's books, which were a big hit. Kathy even donated a portion of the proceeds to AWF!
